What's the oldest funicular still running?

That title goes to the Giessbach funicular in Switzerland, operating since 1879. It links Lake Brienz to the Giessbach hotel and is the world’s oldest hydraulic funicular still active.

Originally powered by a water counterweight system, it was later modernized but remains a Swiss alpine landmark.

In the news: on Sept 3, 2025, Lisbon declared a day of mourning after the Glória funicular derailment, which killed 16 and injured 18 – a stark reminder of historic rail safety needs.
