Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses.
WHO data put the fatality rate at 50–60%, with some outbreaks reaching 90%.
Transmission occurs through direct contact with bodily fluids of the infected or deceased. It can also spill over from infected wildlife (fruit bats, primates).
But there is no mosquito transmission, unlike dengue or malaria.
In Sept 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed a new outbreak in North Kivu, with 15 deaths in a matter of days.
WHO and MSF are stepping up vaccination and awareness to contain the spread in a conflict-hit region.
