New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met President Trump at the White House on November 21, marking a dramatic shift from months of hostility. The 34-year-old democratic socialist and the Republican president focused on affordability, housing, and federal funding, despite Trump previously calling Mamdani a “communist lunatic” and threatening to cut aid. Both leaders struck a surprisingly cordial tone, with Trump saying, “We agree on a lot more than I thought,” and Mamdani pledging to work with anyone to help New Yorkers. Their meeting avoided clashes on immigration and instead highlighted shared concerns over cost-of-living pressures.

The U.S. issued an urgent warning for Venezuelan airspace, citing “potentially hazardous conditions” as security deteriorates and military activity surges. Hours later, a B-52 nuclear-capable bomber, escorted by tankers and fighter jets, staged an attack demonstration under U.S. Southern Command to deter drug trafficking linked to Nicolás Maduro’s regime. The alert covers the Maiquetía Flight Information Region, spanning Venezuela and parts of the southern Caribbean, and warns threats could affect aircraft at all altitudes. Trump refused to rule out strikes, calling Maduro a “narco-terrorist,” while Maduro signaled openness to dialogue amid the largest U.S. troop buildup in the Caribbean since the Cold War.

Washington sees Maduro as a corrupt, authoritarian leader tied to organized crime and responsible for Venezuela’s collapse, making him a target for sanctions, indictments, and even military threats. Under his rule, Venezuela plunged into hyperinflation (270% projected for 2025), shortages, and mass migration – over 5.6 million people fled.

Venezuela is resource-rich, but that wealth hasn’t translated into prosperity for its people. The country holds the largest proven oil reserves in the world, even bigger than Saudi Arabia! It also has significant deposits of gold, bauxite, and rare minerals. However, decades of mismanagement, corruption, and sanctions have crippled production. Oil output fell from 3.2 million barrels per day in the 1990s to under 800,000 today, and hyperinflation plus infrastructure collapse have left most Venezuelans in poverty.

The FBI deployed uniformed police to its Central Records Complex in Winchester, Virginia, after online chatter suggested breaking in to seize Jeffrey Epstein files. The move followed claims by Epstein’s brother that officials were “scrubbing Republican names” from the cache, though no evidence supports this. The files, tied to Epstein’s trafficking network, have been at the center of political fights as Congress passed a bill compelling their release. The FBI says the extra security aims to prevent threats and protect staff amid growing protests and conspiracy theories.
